The rule in one line
Pick 3 tops, 3 bottoms and 3 pairs of shoes. That is nine items. Wear only those nine for a while, and mix them in every way you can.
Some people call it the 333 method. It is the same thing.
Where it comes from
The idea became popular on TikTok. A creator named Rachel Spencer picked nine items and showed how many outfits she could make. In one video she made 19 outfits from them.
We read this in an article on Refinery29, on 5 October 2026.
How many outfits is that?
Here is the math. One top, one bottom and one pair of shoes make one outfit.
- 3 tops × 3 bottoms = 9 mixes.
- 9 mixes × 3 pairs of shoes = 27 outfits.
Not every mix looks good. So you will often end up with fewer, like the 19 in the video above. That is still more than two weeks of outfits from nine items.
You get more if you wear one top over another. For example, a shirt open over a T-shirt.
How to pick your nine items
The rule only works if every top goes with every bottom. So pick with care.
| Item | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Top 1 | A plain T-shirt or tank top | It goes under everything. |
| Top 2 | A shirt with buttons | Wear it closed, or open over top 1. |
| Top 3 | A sweater or a nice top | For cool days and for evenings. |
| Bottom 1 | Jeans | For most days. |
| Bottom 2 | Neat pants | For work and for dinner. |
| Bottom 3 | A skirt or shorts | For warm days and a change. |
| Shoes 1 | Sneakers | For walking. |
| Shoes 2 | A neat pair | For work and going out. |
| Shoes 3 | Sandals or boots | For the weather. |
Three tips that make it work
- Keep the colors few. Pick two or three calm colors, like white, navy and beige. Then add one color you love.
- Test every pair. Lay each top next to each bottom. If one pair looks wrong, change one item.
- Think about your week. Work, a dinner, a walk, the weather. Your nine items must cover all of it.
When to use it
- For a trip. Nine items fit in a small bag.
- For a busy week. You choose once, on Sunday. Then you do not think about it.
- When you feel you have nothing to wear. A small set shows you how much you can do with what you own.
- Before you shop. If nine items make 20 outfits, you may not need new clothes.
3-3-3 rule or Project 333?
The names are close, but they are two different ideas.
| Name | You wear | How long |
|---|---|---|
| 3-3-3 rule | 3 tops, 3 bottoms and 3 pairs of shoes. | A week or a trip |
| Project 333 | Only 33 items. This is a challenge by the writer Courtney Carver. | 3 months |
Both are small versions of a capsule wardrobe. That is a small set of clothes that all go together.
Mistakes to avoid
- Three bright tops that do not go with each other.
- Shoes that only go with one outfit.
- Items that need ironing every day.
- Forgetting the weather.
Try it with an app
Ukti is our app. You take photos of your clothes, and it builds outfits from them.
- Add your nine items, and one more, like a jacket. With ten items, Ukti can build outfits from them.
- Each outfit gets a score for how well it suits you. So you can see which mixes are the good ones.
- You can set your other clothes aside for a while. You do not have to delete them.
