What is a cool undertone?
A cool undertone means the color under your skin leans pink, red or blue, not yellow or gold. It says nothing about how light or dark you are. Very light skin can be cool, and so can brown and dark skin, where a cool undertone can look red-brown, blue-red or plum.
You are probably cool if:
- pure white looks better on you than cream,
- silver jewelry looks better on you than gold,
- bright pink looks better on you than orange.
Hold each one under your chin near a window in daylight, with no makeup. One sign is not enough, so check all three. Our guide on what colors suit you shows the full test with your own clothes.
If your skin is brown or dark
Two common tests may not help you. The vein test asks if the veins on your wrist look blue or green. Veins can be hard to see through dark skin, so if you cannot see yours clearly, skip it. The sun test asks if you burn or tan. Brown and dark skin tan easily and burn far less often than light skin, so the answer tells you little. Use the three checks above, and look at your face, not at the cloth.
The cool kind of most colors
Most colors have a cool kind and a warm kind. So you keep red and green. You pick the cool one.
| Color | Cool kind | Warm kind |
|---|---|---|
| White | Pure white | Cream, ivory |
| Red | Burgundy, wine, cherry | Tomato, rust, orange-red |
| Pink | Fuchsia (a strong purple-pink), rose, bright pink | Coral, peach, salmon |
| Yellow | Lemon, pale yellow | Mustard, turmeric yellow |
| Green | Emerald, bottle green, mint | Olive, moss, khaki |
| Blue and purple | Royal blue, navy, sky blue, violet | Teal that looks green |
| Brown and gray | Gray, charcoal, cool dark brown | Camel, tan, golden brown |
The cool kind is the easy one for you. The warm kind is harder to wear near your face. For jewelry, belts and watches, the easy metals are silver, white gold and steel.
Three outfits that are cool from top to bottom:
- a navy blazer over a white shirt,
- an emerald kurta, which is a long tunic, with silver earrings,
- a wine saree with a gray shawl.
How soft or how strong?
Your undertone tells you which kind of a color to wear. It does not tell you how soft or how strong the color should be. The rest of your coloring gives you a place to start.
- Light hair, light skin and light eyes. Start with soft cool colors: icy pink, lavender, powder blue and soft gray. A powder blue shirt with soft gray pants is a good first test. If they leave you looking washed out, go darker: navy, charcoal or burgundy.
- Dark hair with light or medium skin. Start with strong color: fuchsia, royal blue or emerald, or pure white next to black.
- Brown or dark skin. Start with rich, clear cool colors: a plum saree, or a cobalt blue shirt with white pants. Emerald and fuchsia are worth testing too. If strong color feels hard on you, try softer cool shades like dusty rose, dusty berry and soft charcoal.
Do pastels suit cool undertones?
Guides do not agree. Stitch Fix lists pastels among the colors for cool undertones. FashionBeans, a men's style site, says people with cool undertones "will want to avoid soft, pastel shades or bright colors".
The two guides start from different places. FashionBeans writes for men, and here mainly for men with pale skin and light features. It advises by contrast: pastel shades wash out paler skin, so it suggests darker colors that stand out against the skin. For the same reason it prefers sand, camel and khaki to white. This page advises by undertone, which is why its table puts camel and khaki in the warm column.
Our answer is to test. Hold a pastel under your chin in daylight. If your face looks fresh, wear it. If you look washed out, keep it away from your face, or wear it with a darker cool color like navy or charcoal. On brown and dark skin, a pale, grayish pastel can look out of place on one person and elegant on another, so try one before you decide.
When the occasion picks the color
Some days you do not choose the color. Two examples from Indian weddings and festivals:
- Yellow at a haldi, red if you are the bride. A haldi is a wedding event where turmeric paste is put on the bride and groom, and many people come in yellow. At Hindu weddings in North India, red is usually the bride's color. For both colors, choose from the cool column of the table above: lemon or pale yellow, and wine or cherry red.
- Gold jewelry. If gold is what your family wears to weddings and festivals, keep wearing it. Wear it with a cool color, like emerald, royal blue or wine. Near your face, pieces with pearls or white stones are easier than plain yellow gold.
Our guide to wedding guest outfits in India lists the colors to check before each event.
Warm colors you love
Mustard, rust, orange, camel, olive and cream can make cool skin look dull when they sit right under your face. Keep them, and wear them like this:
- Below the waist, as pants, a skirt or shoes.
- With a cool color near your face. A white shirt under a camel coat works. So does a gray or pink dupatta, which is a long scarf, over a mustard kurta.
If you are not sure you are cool at all, compare with the colors for warm undertones. Some people are warm, and some are in between.
What an app can do
Ukti is our app. It uses your photos to learn your skin undertone: warm, cool or in between. It uses this when it picks one outfit a day from your own clothes. A photo changes with the light, so use photos taken in daylight.
When Ukti builds outfits in your closet, each one gets a score out of 10 for how it suits you. One part of that score is "color on you".
