Is it wrong to skip new clothes?
New clothes are a real Diwali custom. They stand for a new start.
The custom does not ask for a whole new outfit. Even a clothing shop's Diwali guide says that "a new dupatta or a new blouse counts".
That leaves two easy ways to do it. Add one small new thing to clothes you already own. Or, if nobody at home minds, wear your best clothes, clean and pressed.
Start from what you own
If Indian clothes are new to you, these are the words on this page. If not, go straight to the table.
- Kurta: a long tunic. Churidar: slim pants worn under it.
- Dupatta: a long scarf. Lehenga: a long festive skirt.
- Salwar suit: a tunic with loose pants. Nehru jacket: a short jacket with a stand collar.
- Juttis: flat embroidered shoes. Puja: a prayer, here the one at home on Diwali night.
Now find the row that matches your closet.
| You own | Wear it like this | Add |
|---|---|---|
| A silk or cotton-silk kurta | With your best-fitting pants or a churidar. | A dupatta or a stole. A Nehru jacket if you have one. |
| A saree you have worn before | With a different blouse or a plain fitted top. Try a new drape or a belt. | Jewelry you did not wear last time. |
| A lehenga from a wedding | The skirt alone, with a plain shirt or a simple blouse. | Light jewelry. Leave the heavy dupatta at home. |
| Only Western clothes | A dress, or a silk or satin shirt with dark pants, in a rich color. | Gold jewelry. A bright scarf worn like a stole. |
| A dark suit or a blazer | The blazer over a kurta. Or the suit with your brightest shirt. | A pocket square in a festive color. |
| Jeans and a kurta | Dark jeans with a bright kurta. Good for a relaxed evening at home. | Juttis, loafers or clean sneakers. |
Dress for the event
| Event | What it is like | What works |
|---|---|---|
| Puja at home | You sit on the floor, near lamps, with family and elders. | A kurta set, a saree or a salwar suit in a bright color. Nothing tight. |
| Visiting family and friends | Several homes in one day. Shoes come off at each door. | Clothes you can sit in for hours. Shoes that slip off. |
| An evening party or a card party | The dressiest event of the week. | Your best saree, a lehenga skirt, a kurta with a jacket, or a dress in a rich color. |
| The office celebration | A work day with sweets and photos. | A neat kurta set or a light saree. Or work clothes in a festive color with one Indian touch. |
At the office, your normal work rules still apply. Our guide to office wear in India has outfits in Indian and in Western clothes.
Diwali week 2026, from two outfits
The main day, Lakshmi Puja, is Sunday, 8 November 2026. Dhanteras, the first day, is Friday, 6 November. Bhai Dooj, the last day, is Wednesday, 11 November. These dates are for New Delhi, from the Drik Panchang calendar. A date can move by a day in another city or another calendar, so check with your family.
That can mean four or five events in one week. You do not need five outfits. Here is the week from a small closet: one silk kurta, one saree or a second kurta, dark pants, a churidar, a dupatta and a jacket.
| Day | Wear | The change |
|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | The kurta with the dark pants | No dupatta. Easy for a day of shopping. |
| A party that week | The saree, or the second kurta, with the jacket | The jacket and your biggest earrings. |
| The main day | The kurta with the churidar and the dupatta | The dupatta and gold jewelry. |
| Bhai Dooj | The saree with its own blouse, or the second kurta with the dark pants | Light jewelry for a long family lunch. |
Colors: easy choices, and two to check
Easy choices. Deep red, bright pink, orange, yellow, emerald green, royal blue and gold. Gold is seen as lucky. It works at every event.
Check first: plain black and plain white. Skip plain black at a family puja. More than one guide says so. One shop's guide says the same of plain white worn alone, though cream and ivory are a classic choice for a kurta. As part of a print or a pattern, black and white are fine. Evening parties are another matter: people do wear black to them, in sarees and in lehengas. If you are not sure, ask the host.
Our guide to what colors suit you has a test you can do with your own clothes. It shows which of these colors look best on you.
Make old clothes look new
The first table already changes one half of the outfit or adds a jacket. Two more things help.
- Borrow. A saree from your mother's closet or a kurta from a friend is new to you.
- Press it. Iron or steam everything, and polish your shoes. Old clothes that are pressed look better than new clothes that are creased.
Clothes you bought for a wedding this year can come out again now. Our guide to wedding guest outfits in India has more ways to wear the same clothes twice.
The night-before check
- Put the whole outfit on, with the shoes and the jewelry.
- Sit down in it and lift your arms. If something pulls or slips, change it now.
- Pin what needs pins: the saree pleats, the dupatta on your shoulder.
- Plan a warm layer. November evenings in north India are cool. In Delhi the normal low for the month is 13°C. A shawl is enough. For the colder weeks after, see what to wear in Delhi in winter.
- Think about the lamps. Keep long sleeves and loose dupatta ends away from the diyas, the small oil lamps. If you will light firecrackers, change into cotton first. The Himachal Pradesh fire service advises cotton clothes, because synthetic fabrics catch fire easily.
See your clothes in one place
Festive clothes come out once or twice a year, so it is easy to forget what you own. A digital closet shows your kurtas, sarees, dupattas and jackets on one screen.
Ukti is our app. You take photos of what you own, and it picks one outfit a day from your own clothes and tells you why. You can also tell it about your day, by voice or by typing. For example: "Diwali party at a friend's home tonight."
