The short answer
An office party is still work. Your manager and your team will see you, and the photos may stay up for years. So wear something you would be happy to see in those photos.
Four outfits that work at most parties:
- Women, Indian clothes. A silk or cotton-silk kurta set in a deep color, with small earrings and flat or block-heel sandals.
- Women, Western clothes. Black pants with a satin top and a blazer, or a navy or black dress that reaches the knee or lower.
- Men, Indian clothes. A plain kurta with formal pants instead of the loose pyjama, and a Nehru jacket on top.
- Men, Western clothes. A dark shirt with chinos or formal pants, a blazer and leather shoes. No tie is needed.
What the invitation is telling you
Read the invitation again before you choose. A few words on it decide most of the outfit.
| The invitation says | What it means | An outfit that fits |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing about clothes | Your normal work clothes, made a little smarter. | A shirt and blazer, or a kurta set in a richer fabric than usual. |
| "Smart casual" | Neat, but no suit. | Dark jeans or chinos with a good shirt or top and a jacket. |
| "Cocktail" | An evening party. Dress up. | A dark dress, a saree, or a dark suit with an open collar. |
| "Ethnic" or "Indian wear" | Indian clothes, but not wedding clothes. | A kurta set, a light saree, or a kurta with a Nehru jacket. |
| A theme | One touch of the theme is enough. | Your normal party outfit with one piece in the theme's color. |
If the words still do not help, ask a colleague what they plan to wear. It is a normal question before an office party. Our guide to office dress codes explains business casual, smart casual and formal in more detail.
Christmas, New Year or the annual party
A Christmas party. One piece in red, deep green or gold is enough, like a red kurta, a green dupatta or a gold tie. You do not need a Christmas sweater unless the invitation asks for one.
A New Year party. This is the night for a little shine: a sequin or satin top, a silk kurta, or a velvet blazer. Keep the rest of the outfit plain.
An annual party or annual day with a stage. Dress as for a hotel party at night. You may walk up for an award or a team photo, so wear shoes you can walk in with ease.
Dress for the place and the time
In the office, in the afternoon
You will work first and celebrate after. Wear your normal work clothes and bring one thing that makes them festive: a silk dupatta, a blazer, a bright scarf or a pair of statement earrings. Keep it at your desk until the party starts.
A hotel or banquet hall party at night
This is the dressiest kind of office party. Wear darker colors and better fabrics: a saree, a dark dress, a kurta set with some light embroidery, a dark suit, or a blazer over a shirt. Wear shoes you can stand in for three hours, because there may be no chairs near the stage or the bar.
On a rooftop or a lawn in North India
December nights in the north are cold. In Delhi, the temperature falls through the night to a normal low of 8.4°C by early morning, so a party that ends late gets cold. Plan a warm layer that goes with the outfit: a velvet or wool blazer, a shawl, a long coat or a Nehru jacket over a sweater. A thin thermal top under a kurta or a shirt does not show. Our guide to what to wear in Delhi in winter has more on cold nights.
In a city with warm nights, you do not need any of this. Check the forecast for the evening. Our temperature chart shows what each number means for clothes.
At a lounge or a pub
Smart casual is right here. Dark jeans or chinos, a good shirt or a fitted top, and a jacket you can take off. A suit will look too formal.
Outfit ideas from clothes you already own
You probably do not need to buy anything. Start with the best version of what you wear to work, then change one thing.
- Your work kurta set becomes a party outfit with a silk dupatta and gold or silver earrings.
- Your black office pants go with a satin or sequin top and a blazer.
- A saree you wore to a family function works if it is light in weight. Wear it with a full-sleeve blouse on a cold night.
- A dark formal shirt looks right for a party with the top button open and a blazer.
- Your interview suit works at a hotel party at night without the tie, with a dark shirt or a fine sweater under the jacket.
If you have a festive kurta from Diwali, you can wear it again. Our guide to what to wear for Diwali builds festive outfits from the same kind of clothes.
What not to wear
- Wedding clothes. A heavy lehenga, a sherwani or a lot of sequins will look like too much next to your colleagues.
- Very short or very low-cut clothes. Ask yourself if you would wear it in front of your manager. If not, change it.
- New shoes you have not walked in. You will be standing, walking and maybe dancing for hours.
- T-shirts with words or big logos, shorts and flip-flops, unless the invitation says the party is casual.
- Strong perfume. You will stand close to people all night. Use a little.
Let your own clothes do the work
Ukti is our app. You take photos of your clothes, and once you have ten pieces, it builds outfits from them. Pick the occasion "wedding and party", or type the day in your own words, like "office party on a rooftop, cold out". It shows how it read your words, then gives you a safe outfit, a bold one and something different.
