The four dress codes most offices use
| Name | What it means | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| Business formal | A dark suit with a shirt and tie. Or a suit or dress with a jacket. Formal leather shoes. | Law, banks, big client meetings |
| Business professional | A suit, or a blazer with matching pants or a skirt. A tie is not always needed. | Consulting, government offices |
| Business casual | No suit. Neat pants or a skirt, with a shirt, blouse or thin sweater. A blazer if you like. | Most offices |
| Smart casual | Neat but relaxed. Dark jeans, polo shirts, sweaters, clean sneakers. | Tech, media, design, most Fridays |
Offices use these names loosely. Business casual in one company can be smart casual in another. Use the table to start. Then look at what people around you wear.
Outfit examples
Business formal
A navy or dark gray suit, a white or light blue shirt, a simple tie and black or dark brown leather shoes. Or a neat dress with a matching jacket. Or a pants suit with a silk blouse and closed shoes.
Business professional
The same suit with no tie. Or neat pants with a blazer in a different color. Or a knee-length skirt with a blouse and a jacket.
Business casual
Chinos or wool pants with a shirt and a thin sweater. A long skirt with a knit top. A blazer over a plain T-shirt, if your office allows T-shirts. Loafers or plain flat shoes.
Smart casual
Dark jeans with a shirt and an overshirt. A knit polo with neat pants. A casual dress with clean white sneakers.
What is wrong in every office
- Clothes that are wrinkled, stained or worn out.
- Gym clothes, unless your office says they are fine.
- Beach clothes, like flip-flops, tank tops and very short shorts.
- Big logos and jokes on T-shirts, in most offices.
Fit matters more than the dress code. A plain shirt that fits looks better than a costly suit that does not.
How to find out the dress code
- Look at your bosses. People two levels above you show how smart you can go.
- Look at company photos. Team pages and event photos show what people really wear.
- Ask. Send a message to your manager or the recruiter before day one. This is normal.
- Start a little more formal. You can take a blazer off. You cannot put on a blazer you did not bring.
Client days and video calls
When you visit a client, dress for their office, not yours.
On a video call, people only see your top half. A plain color with a collar or a neat neckline looks best. Thin stripes and small checks can look strange on camera.
Make it easy every day
When you know your office dress code, pick two or three go-to outfits. Then you do not have to think each morning.
Or let an app choose. Ukti is our app. It picks one outfit a day from your own clothes.
For a big day, open your closet in Ukti and pick the occasion. "Work" and "big meeting" are two of the choices. Ukti builds three outfits from your own clothes and scores how well each one suits you.
