The short answer
Weeks, not days. Your skin makes new skin slowly. The top layer is replaced about once a month. It is slower as you get older.
So a product needs time before you can see what it does.
How long each thing takes
| What you use | What it does | When you may see it |
|---|---|---|
| Moisturizer | Softer skin, fewer flakes. | A few days to two weeks |
| Gentle cleanser | Skin that does not feel tight. | A few days |
| Sunscreen | Helps stop new sun marks. It protects from the first day. | You see the result over months |
| Products for spots | Fewer new spots. | About six to eight weeks |
| Products for dark marks | Marks slowly get lighter. | About eight to twelve weeks |
| Products for fine lines | Smoother skin. | About twelve weeks or more |
These are common times. Your skin may be faster or slower.
The four-week rule
- Start one new product. Only one.
- Use it as the label says for four to six weeks.
- Take a photo each week.
- Then decide. Keep it, or stop.
If you start three products at once, you will not know which one helped. You also will not know which one caused a problem.
When to stop sooner
Stop right away if your skin:
- burns or stings and it does not pass,
- itches a lot,
- gets red, swollen or gets a rash.
Wash the product off. If it does not calm down, see a doctor.
Why it feels like nothing is working
- You look every day. Slow change is hard to see day by day.
- You change products too often. Nothing gets enough time.
- You skip days. Skincare works when you do it every day.
- The light changes. Your skin looks different in each mirror.
How to track your skin
- Take one photo a week, with no makeup and no filter.
- Use the same place, the same light and the same time of day.
- Write down what you use, and when you started.
- Compare this week with four weeks ago.
Our guide shows how to take progress photos you can compare.
What helps skincare work
- Do it every day. A simple routine is easier to keep.
- Use sunscreen. The sun undoes a lot of your work.
- Sleep well. Skin repairs itself at night.
- Be gentle. Hard scrubbing slows things down.
Let an app track it for you
Ukti is our app. Once a week you take a selfie, and Ukti reads your skin.
- You get a skin score, and a chart of the score across seven weeks.
- You get care steps for the week.
- Ukti tells you what should change by the end of the week. Your next selfie checks it.
