What is the weather like?
Spring in New York runs from March to May. It gets warmer month by month. But a warm day can be followed by a cold one.
| Month | What to expect | Top layer |
|---|---|---|
| March | Still cold. Some days feel like winter. | A warm coat |
| April | Cool mornings, mild afternoons, lots of rain. | A trench coat or light jacket |
| May | Mild to warm. Evenings can be cool. | A light jacket or just a sweater |
Always check the forecast the day before. A warm week can turn cold in one night.
The three-layer plan
Wear three thin layers, not one thick one. Then you can take one off when it gets warm.
- First layer. A T-shirt or a shirt.
- Middle layer. A sweater or cardigan.
- Top layer. A coat or jacket that keeps out wind and light rain.
Shops, trains and restaurants are warm inside. You will take the top layer off many times a day. Pick one that is easy to carry.
Rain
April is often rainy. Carry a small umbrella in your bag. A trench coat or a jacket that keeps water out is very useful. Wear shoes that can get wet.
Shoes
You will walk a lot in New York. Wear shoes that feel good after many hours.
- Clean sneakers go with almost everything.
- Ankle boots are good for March and for rain.
- Loafers work for nicer places.
Do not bring new shoes you have never worn. They will hurt.
Outfits that work
- A day of walking. Jeans, a T-shirt, a sweater, a light jacket and sneakers.
- A rainy day. Dark pants, a sweater, a trench coat and ankle boots.
- Dinner out. Dark jeans or pants, a nice shirt or top, a blazer and loafers.
- A warm May day. Light pants or a dress, with a sweater in your bag for the evening.
What to pack for a five-day trip
- One coat or jacket for the month you are going
- Two sweaters
- Four tops
- Two pairs of pants or jeans
- One nicer outfit for dinner
- Two pairs of shoes you have already worn a lot
- A small umbrella and a scarf
Choose colors that go together. Then every top works with every pair of pants. Our capsule wardrobe guide explains how.
Do you live in New York?
Then spring is the hardest season to dress for, because every day is different.
Ukti is our app. You take photos of your clothes. Every morning it picks one outfit from them and tells you why. It can read the weather where you are and pick the outfit for it. Sharing your location is optional.
You can also tell it about your day, by voice or by typing. For example: "I have dinner out tonight."
