Is there a dress code at the Taj Mahal?
No. The Taj Mahal's official site has a page of do's and don'ts for visitors, and it has no rule about clothes. Its rules are about what you carry and how you behave: no food, no smoking, no drones, and no photos inside the main tomb.
Still, it is polite to cover up. The Taj Mahal is a tomb, and a mosque stands on its west side. Travel guides advise covering your shoulders and knees. Long pants and a top with sleeves do that, and so does a kurta (a long tunic) worn with pants. Shorts and sleeveless tops are not banned, but in winter you would be cold in them at the gate.
How cold is Agra in winter?
India's weather office keeps a table of normal temperatures for Agra, averaged over 1991 to 2020. Here are its lows and highs for the four winter months.
| Month | Low and high | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| November | 13.2°C to 29.2°C | Warm days. A light sweater at dawn. |
| December | 8.1°C to 23.7°C | Cold at dawn, mild by noon. |
| January | 7.4°C to 22.2°C | The coldest month. Two warm layers at dawn. |
| February | 10.4°C to 26.2°C | Cool at dawn, warm by noon. |
A normal low is an average, so some mornings are colder. Fog is the other thing to plan for. The weather office counts fog on 4.5 days in a normal December and 5.4 days in a normal January, and on less than one day in November or February. A foggy morning feels damp and colder, and the tomb can vanish from view.
When the gates open
The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset. It is closed every Friday. The official site says most visitors prefer sunrise, and that sunset is usually busier.
| Date | Sunrise | Gates open |
|---|---|---|
| 15 November | 6:38 am | About 6:10 am |
| 15 December | 7:00 am | About 6:30 am |
| 15 January | 7:09 am | About 6:40 am |
| 15 February | 6:55 am | About 6:25 am |
At that hour the day has not warmed up yet, and you may wait in line at the security check before you walk in.
Dress for the whole day, not only the gate
| Time | What it is like | Wear |
|---|---|---|
| At the gate, at dawn | Cold, and damp on a foggy day. | A sweater, closed shoes and socks. In December and January, add a light padded jacket or a thick shawl, and a scarf. |
| Late morning in the garden | Mild, and warm in the sun. | A T-shirt, a long-sleeve top or a kurta. The warm layers come off. |
| Late afternoon and the trip back | Cool again as the sun goes down. | The sweater goes back on. Keep the jacket at hand for the evening. |
A sunset visit works the other way: start light, and have the warm layers ready for the walk out.
Shoes, socks and what to carry
Shoes. A visit means a lot of walking on stone and garden paths. Wear sneakers or flat shoes you have already walked in, and leave the heels at home.
Shoe covers and socks. The official site says shoe covers come free with the ticket for foreign visitors. To go into the main tomb, travel guides say you either wear the covers over your shoes or take your shoes off. Either way, wear socks in winter, and pick shoes that slip on and off easily.
A small bag. The official rules ask you to avoid big bags, which can slow down the security check. They ban food, even toffees, and headphones, mobile chargers, tripods and other electric goods, except a camera. A water bottle is allowed. By 10 am you will want the sweater off. Carry a small bag for it, or tie it around your waist. A shawl is easy too: wrap it around you early, and carry it over one shoulder later.
Outfits that work
- A kurta set, for women. A long cotton or wool-blend kurta with straight pants or leggings, a cardigan, and a wool shawl on top. Sneakers or flat closed shoes, with socks.
- Jeans and a sweater, for anyone. Jeans or loose pants, a long-sleeve top, a sweater and a light padded jacket. Sneakers.
- A kurta, for men. A full-sleeve kurta with straight pants, a Nehru jacket over it (a short jacket with no sleeves and a stand-up collar), and a wool shawl for the cold first hour.
- Chinos and a shirt. Chinos, a full-sleeve shirt, a crew-neck sweater and a light jacket. Sneakers, or leather shoes you can walk in for hours.
A tip for photos. The tomb is white marble, so one strong color stands out in front of it: red, mustard, emerald green or cobalt blue. White, cream and pale gray blend into the background. A colored shawl or scarf is the easiest way to add one.
One suitcase for Delhi, Agra and Jaipur
If Agra is one stop on a trip with Delhi or Jaipur, one set of layers works for all three. Agra's mornings are about as cold as Delhi's: a normal January runs from 7.4°C to 22.2°C in Agra, and from 7.5°C to 20.1°C in New Delhi. Agra still gets fog, but the weather office counts it on fewer days: 5.4 in a normal January, against 21.6 in New Delhi.
For the other two cities, see what to wear in Delhi in winter and what to wear in Jaipur in winter. Varanasi, farther east, has more foggy winter mornings than Agra: see what to wear in Varanasi in winter. For any other number on the forecast, use our chart of what to wear at every temperature. An app that dresses you for the weather
Ukti is our app. Each morning it shows the weather where you are and picks one outfit for that weather from your own clothes. You can tell it that you feel colder, or warmer, than the forecast. You can also talk to its stylist: say what the day is, such as a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal and a long drive back. It asks a few short questions, then makes an outfit for that day.
