Three ideas that work for every body
- Fit. Clothes that are the right size for you.
- Balance. The top half and the bottom half of your body look even.
- One long line. The eye moves up and down, not side to side.
If you only learn one of these, learn fit.
Fit comes first
Check these four places on anything you wear:
- Shoulders. The line where the sleeve joins the top sits at the end of your shoulder.
- Chest and waist. You can button it and still breathe. The buttons do not pull.
- Sleeves. They end at your wrist bone.
- Pants. They touch the top of your shoe. They do not sit in a pile at your ankle.
A tailor can fix sleeves and pant length for a small price. This changes how you look more than a new shirt does.
Find your shape in the mirror
Put on clothes that sit close to your body. Look at your shoulders, your waist and your hips.
| What you see | What helps |
|---|---|
| Shoulders, waist and hips about the same | Add shape at the waist. A belt, a tucked top, a jacket that curves in. |
| Hips wider than shoulders | Make people look at your top half. Brighter tops, collars, wider necklines. Plain, darker pants. |
| Shoulders wider than hips | Keep the top simple. Make people look at your bottom half. Wider pants, a full skirt, lighter colors below. |
| A clear waist, with shoulders and hips even | Follow your shape. Tops that sit close to your body, belts, and dresses that tie at the waist. |
| A rounder middle | Tops that fall straight from the chest. Open jackets. One color from top to bottom. |
These are not strict rules. They are a place to start.
Dress for your height
If you are shorter
- Wear one color from top to bottom, or colors that are close.
- Pick pants with a high waist. Your legs look longer.
- Keep jackets and tops short. A long top cuts you in half.
- Wear shoes in the same color as your pants.
If you are taller
- You can wear two colors, one on top and one below.
- Long coats and long jackets look good on you.
- A belt in a different color breaks the long line.
- Check sleeve and pant length. Too short is the common problem.
Make one long line
This works for everyone.
- Wear a jacket open over a top in a different color. This makes a long line down the middle.
- Pick a V-shaped neckline. It makes your neck look longer.
- Match your shoes to your pants.
- Choose stripes that go up and down.
Color helps too
Dark colors make an area look smaller. Light and bright colors make it stand out. So put the color you love on the part of you that you like most.

Let an app check it for you
Ukti is our app. You add a selfie and a full-length photo. Ukti reads your height from the photo and asks you to check it. You can also add your height and your sizes in your profile.
Then Ukti builds outfits from your own clothes. Each outfit gets a score out of 10, with a part called "shape on you". Read about how Ukti can rate your outfit.
You can also see a picture of you wearing the outfit. With a full-length photo, the picture matches your height and build.
