What to wear to the Golden Temple in winter

Cover your head with cloth, wear long clothes, and leave your shoes and socks at the shoe room. In winter that means bare feet on a cold floor, in a city where the coldest nights fall close to 0°C. So keep warm from the ankles up: a thermal (a thin, warm layer next to the skin), a sweater, and a padded jacket or thick wool shawl.

Is there a dress code at the Golden Temple?

Yes, and it is short. A list of rules printed by The Tribune in June 2024 asks for three things. Cover your head with cloth. Avoid short clothes. Take off your shoes and socks, leave them at the shoe room, and wash your hands and feet before you go in.

That is all it says about clothes. It names no color, and you do not need Indian clothes. The SGPC is the committee that runs the temple. Its code of conduct says that "no person, no matter which country, religion or caste" is kept out of a gurdwara, a Sikh place of worship. Tobacco, alcohol and other intoxicants are not allowed, even in your bag.

"Short clothes" is easy to get right in winter. AmritsarGoldenTemple.in, an independent guide site, says to cover your shoulders and knees, and to skip tight clothes. Long pants, loose jeans, a long skirt, a kurta (a long tunic) with pants and a saree all do that.

Rules can change. The same Tribune report says a digital screen at the main entrance shows the dos and don'ts in Punjabi, Hindi and English, so read it when you arrive. If you are not sure, ask at the temple's information office. Other temples can ask for the opposite: at Tirumala, caps and turbans are not allowed inside. Our temple dress code guide sets out the rules at eight temples, including this one.

What to cover your head with

Everyone covers their head, men and women, for the whole time inside the complex. AmritsarGoldenTemple.in says scarves are free outside the entrances. In winter, bring your own wool scarf or use your shawl, because a thick one also keeps your head and ears warm.

A wool cap is less certain. In 2010, before a planned visit by the US president, the SGPC's secretary said "a sober cap", meaning a plain one, would do. The same report is mixed on sports caps: the paper says they do not meet the rules, but the SGPC said a golf cap would be fine for the president. So leave a baseball cap behind. That was one case, a long time ago, and the rule printed in 2024 says cloth. If you wear a wool cap, carry a scarf as well.

The hard part: bare feet on a cold floor

One packing guide we read says socks are optional. The printed rules say to take them off, and another travel guide says the same. So you walk barefoot, with feet that have just been washed, in the coldest months of the year.

The temple does help. In January 2024, The Tribune reported "extra mats and warm carpets" on the stairs and floors, on the walkway around the pool (the parikrama) and in the inner corridors. It also reported lukewarm water for washing feet at all four entrances. That is one winter's report, so do not expect every step to be covered.

  • Wear one more layer than the forecast suggests. You cannot warm your feet, so warm everything else.
  • Choose shoes that slip off. Loafers or slip-on sneakers save time at the shoe room. One travel guide says it is free and gives you a token.
  • Carry a small towel and dry socks. When you get your shoes back, dry your feet and put the socks on.

If you have diabetes or another condition that affects your feet, ask your doctor about walking barefoot on cold floors before you go.

How cold is Amritsar in winter?

Colder at night than the normal numbers suggest. The weather office's table of normal lows and highs for the city is old: it covers 1951 to 1980, and we could not find a newer one. So here it is next to something more recent: how cold the coldest night of each month has been since 2012.

MonthNormalColdest night
November9 to 26.9°C4.8 to 9.4°C
December4.6 to 21.3°C-0.5 to 4.4°C
January3.9 to 19.3°C-2 to 2.8°C
February6.5 to 22.2°C-0.3 to 5.1°C

Read the last column like this: since 2012, January's coldest night has always been between -2°C and 2.8°C. So on a trip in December or January, you may meet a night close to freezing. In January 2026, the coldest was 1.1°C, on the 12th. For any other number on the forecast, use our chart of what to wear at each temperature.

The afternoons are mild on a clear day, but not every day is clear. On 11 January 2024, The Tribune reported a high of only 10°C. The old table counts fog on just 3 to 4 days in December and January, and it is not safe to rely on that. On 17 January 2026, the weather office listed visibility at Amritsar as 0 meters. Fog makes a cold morning feel damp, so keep your jacket on until you can see the sun.

Dress for the hour you go

The temple's winter day is its shortest, but it is still long. By the SGPC's own routine for the months of Kattak to Magh, about mid-October to mid-February, the doors open and the hymns begin at 3 am. The Palki Sahib, the procession that carries the holy book to the shrine, leaves at 5 am. At night, the closing reading is at 9:30 pm and the procession goes back at 9:45 pm.

The sun does not rise until about 7:20 am in mid-December and 7:30 am in mid-January. So if you want to see either procession, you will be there in the cold.

  • From 3 am to sunrise. The coldest hours. Wear a thermal top and leggings, a sweater, and a padded jacket or thick shawl.
  • Late morning to afternoon. Mild on a clear day. A sweater and a scarf are enough, but carry the jacket or shawl.
  • After dark. Cold again, and you will stand still for a long time. Put everything back on.

Outfits that work

Pick clothes you can sit down in. The printed rules ask you to keep your legs folded when you sit on the walkway. People also eat the free community meal, the langar, sitting on the ground.

  • A kurta set, for women. A long kurta with straight pants, thermal leggings under them, a cardigan and a wool shawl. Use a thick dupatta, the long scarf worn with a suit, on your head.
  • Jeans and a sweater, for anyone. Loose jeans, a thermal top, a sweater and a padded jacket, with a wool scarf tied over your head.
  • A kurta, for men. A full-sleeve kurta with straight pants, a thermal top under it, a sweater or a Nehru jacket (a short jacket with no sleeves), and a wool shawl. Tie a cloth or scarf over your head.
  • A saree. A full-sleeve blouse, thermal leggings under the petticoat and a wool shawl. Cover your head with the end of the saree or the shawl. Drape the hem a little higher than usual, because the floor near the foot-washing water is wet.

Our guide to staying warm in a kurta or saree explains how to hide each layer.

Gurpurab and the rest of the trip

Gurpurab. Guru Nanak Jayanti, the birthday of the first Sikh Guru, falls on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, by Drik Panchang's calendar. Some sites show a day either side, so check before you book. The temple is lit up for the day, so you may want to stay after dark. In 13 of the last 14 years, November's coldest night came on or after the 20th, and those nights ran from 4.8°C to 9.4°C. Take a sweater and a shawl, even if the afternoon feels warm.

The Attari-Wagah border. The flag ceremony at the border is a common half-day trip from Amritsar. You sit on concrete stands, and one travel guide says bags are turned away, so wear your warm layers from the start.

Dressing for Amritsar with Ukti

Ukti is our app. If you share your location, it picks one outfit each morning for the weather where you are, from your own clothes. If you feel the cold more than most people, you can tell it that you feel colder than the forecast. You can also talk to its stylist. Say that you are going to the Golden Temple at 5 am. It asks a few short questions, then makes an outfit for that day.

Common questions

Can I keep my socks on at the Golden Temple?

Plan to take them off. A list of rules printed by The Tribune in June 2024 says to remove your shoes and socks at the shoe room, then wash your hands and feet. Keep a dry pair in your bag for when you come out.

Can I wear jeans to the Golden Temple?

Yes. One independent guide site says jeans are allowed if they are not ripped, tight or flashy. Choose a loose pair, because you may sit on the floor with your legs folded.

Can I wear a wool cap instead of a scarf?

A scarf is the safe choice, because the printed rule says to cover your head with cloth. If you wear a cap for warmth, carry a scarf too, and use it if a volunteer asks you to.

Do I need to bring my own head covering?

No. An independent guide site says scarves are free outside the entrances. In winter, bring your own wool scarf anyway, for the warmth.

Is Amritsar colder than Delhi in January?

It can be, at night. In January 2026, the coldest reading from India's weather office was 1.1°C in Amritsar and 2.9°C at Safdarjung in New Delhi.
