Udaipur's winter in numbers
India's weather office keeps a table of normal temperatures for Udaipur. Its station is at Dabok, the airport outside the city, so the old city may differ a little. These are its numbers for 1991 to 2020.
| Month | Low and high | What to wear |
|---|---|---|
| November | 13.0°C to 29.8°C | Summer clothes by day. A sweater and a thin jacket at dawn, a sweater after dark. |
| December | 8.8°C to 26.0°C | A shirt by day. A sweater and a light padded jacket at dawn and at night. |
| January | 7.6°C to 24.5°C | The same as December. All the layers at dawn. |
| February | 10.3°C to 27.9°C | A shirt by day. A sweater and a thin jacket at dawn, a sweater after dark. |
You can leave the umbrella at home. The office counts less than one rainy day in each of these months, and fog on less than one day.
The normal low hides the coldest mornings. From 2011 to 2021, the coldest morning of each January was between 2.2°C and 4.4°C. From 2008 to 2020, the coldest in each December was between 1.8°C and 7.0°C. So look at the forecast the night before if you plan to be out at sunrise.
Some web pages give a December low of 10°C or 11°C. The office's normal is 8.8°C, so pack for the colder number.
Why one thick coat is the wrong idea
Udaipur's day swings more than Jaipur's or Delhi's. On a normal January day it rises 16.9 degrees from dawn to the afternoon. Jaipur rises 14.1 degrees, and New Delhi 12.6.
That is three rows apart on our chart of what to wear at each temperature. At dawn it is the row for a warm jacket over a sweater. In the afternoon it is the row for a T-shirt or a light shirt. A thick coat is right for one hour and wrong for the rest of the day, and you cannot take off half of it.
Build the outfit in three parts instead, and take them off one at a time:
- a T-shirt, a light shirt or a kurta, which is a long tunic,
- a sweater or a cardigan,
- a light padded jacket or a thick shawl in December and January, or a thin jacket in November and February.
Wear long pants or a long skirt all day. Bring a bag big enough for the sweater and the jacket, because you will carry them from late morning.
Dress by the hour
| Time | What it is like | Wear |
|---|---|---|
| Sunrise walk or early temple | The coldest part of the day | All three layers. Closed shoes and socks. A scarf if you feel the cold. |
| Late morning to afternoon | Warm | The first layer. Sunglasses and a cap. |
| Sunset, on the lake or a hill | Cooling fast, and you stand or sit still | Put the sweater back on. Keep the jacket or shawl in reach. |
| Dinner on a rooftop | Cold, and you sit for a long time | All three layers, a scarf and closed shoes. |
On a boat, at a palace, at a temple
A boat on Lake Pichola. Listings put a ride at about 30 minutes to an hour, and many people choose the one at sunset. The afternoon feels warm when you get on. Then you sit still on the water while the sun goes down, so dress one row colder than the number on your phone. Bring the shawl or the jacket, and wear flat shoes with a good grip for getting in and out. Check the last boat and the price at the jetty.
The palaces and old lanes. You will walk a lot, on stone and up steps. Smooth soles slip on polished stone, so wear sneakers or flat shoes with a grip. Rajasthan Tourism says the Monsoon Palace stands on top of the Bansdara hills. If you go up for the view at the end of the day, expect to want the sweater.
Temples. Your shoes come off at the door, so wear ones that are easy to remove. In December 2024, The Mooknayak reported that the management of the Eklingji temple, outside Udaipur, had banned mobile phones and barred short clothes such as mini skirts, bermudas and night suits. So leave your phone behind or ask about a counter, and wear long clothes. Rules differ from temple to temple. See our guide to temple dress codes in India.
If you are here for a wedding
A daytime event in winter is warm, and an event after dark is not. You also sit still for hours at a dinner, which feels colder than a walk. So plan the warm layer as part of the outfit, not as something you add at the door.
- Women. A shawl or a stole that goes with your saree or lehenga, and a thin top under the blouse if the dress allows it.
- Men. A bandhgala (a closed-neck jacket) is warmer than a kurta alone. So is a Nehru jacket, the short kind with no sleeves. Under either, you can wear a thermal top: a thin, warm layer next to your skin.
Our guide on how to stay warm in Indian clothes shows what goes under and what goes on top, and our guide to wedding guest outfits in India covers each event.
What to pack
For a week in December or January:
- For the day: five T-shirts, shirts or kurtas, two pairs of long pants or long skirts, and shoes you can walk in all day.
- For the cold ends of the day: two sweaters or cardigans, one light padded jacket or one thick shawl, a scarf and socks.
- For the sun: sunglasses, a cap and sunscreen.
- Maybe: one thin thermal top, if you will be out at dawn or if you feel the cold.
- Leave at home: the heavy coat and the umbrella.
In November or late February, take a thin jacket in place of the padded one, and leave the thermal top at home.
Going on to Jaipur or Delhi?
Pack for the coldest stop. A bag packed for Delhi covers Udaipur too. In a normal January, Udaipur's mornings are close to Jaipur's and New Delhi's, at 7.6°C against 8.4°C and 7.5°C. Its afternoons are warmer, at 24.5°C against 22.5°C and 20.1°C. The bigger difference is fog: New Delhi has it on about 22 days in January, Jaipur on 2 or 3 days, and Udaipur almost never. See our guides to Jaipur in winter and Delhi in winter.
Outfits for the day you have planned
Ukti is our app. With ten pieces in your closet, you can type your day in your own words, such as "boat ride at sunset, then dinner outdoors", and it builds outfits for it from your clothes. You can also talk it through with its stylist. It does not make packing lists.
